Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix

Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix

Carnivorous plants need soil that is low in nutrients and allows air to reach the roots while still retaining water. Buying the ingredients to make your own mix can be pricey though, especially if you only need a small amount. This mix is the same one we use to grow many of the carnivorous plants in our nursery (please see caution about butterworts).  Amounts are measured and shipped dry.

Soil ingredients:

  • Organic Sphagnum Peat Moss
  • Organic Perlite
  • Silica Sand

Soil is free from fertilizer additives.

Caution: Peat moss makes soil acidic which works well for most carnivorous plants. However, several butterwort species prefer neutral or basic soils. Please use this mix with caution if potting butterworts.
