A Venus Flytrap catches bugs with a trapping structure at the end of each leaf. Tiny hairs on the inner surface of the trap are triggered when touched. If two or more hairs are touched within twenty seconds of each other, the trap will snap shut. Requiring redundant triggering helps conserve energy if objects with no nutritional value such as leaf litter happen to contact the trap. If a bug triggers a trap to snap shut and continues stimulating the hairs inside, the trap will seal completely, forming a ‘stomach’. After sealing shut, the trap will begin secreting digestive enzymes to break down the bug into usable nutrients for the plant.
