Pinguicula hemiepiphytica is native to the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. The butterwort was thought to be a form of P. moranensis until it was formally described as a separate species by Sergio Zamudio and Jerzy Rzedowski in 1991. P. hemiepiphytica grows primarily as an epiphyte on mossy tree trunks alongside orchids and bromeliads, but can be found growing on rocks as well. In cultivation, the plant does well in a mineral-based substrate that drains easily although a small amount of sphagnum moss can also be included for additional moisture retention. Please note: Some plants are more green on arrival but will turn pinkish/red with time under intense light.
