While laying out plans for a future dam, it was discovered in 1990 along with P. moctezumae in Moctezuma canyon. Named after Elizabeth Argüelles, a botanist and friend of the author, P. elizabethiae was formally described as its own species in 1999 by Dr. Sergio Zamudio.
