Pinguicula ‘Florian’ is a hybrid between P. debbertiana and P. esseriana. The butterwort was registered as a cultivar in 2004 and is named after the breeder’s oldest son. P. ‘Florian’ produces leaves that become an intense shade of red under strong light. This plant prefers a loose mineral-based substrate that drains easily.
Description
Size and packing method: You will receive a bare root plant about 0.5 inches in diameter, carefully wrapped in a damp paper towel. If selecting with soil mix, you will receive a little over one cup of our prepackaged Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix in addition to the bare root plant. This quantity of soil is roughly enough to fill one 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.5 inch square pot.
Growing requirements
Mature size: 1-2 inches in diameter
Light: Partial to full sun or grow light equivalent
Soil: Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix
Feeding: Feed bugs, dried bloodworms, fish food, or diluted foliar fertilizer such as Maxsea every 2-3 weeks
Humidity: 50-80% with adequate airflow
Water: While in its carnivorous phase, provide enough distilled water for the media to remain damp. Reduce watering and allow the media to dry out regularly once the succulent rosette begins to form.
Temperature: 55-85°F
Dormancy: Technically none, however carnivorous leaves are replaced by a smaller succulent rosette for part of the year
Planting and adjustment instructions will be included with your shipment.

This Florian was the very first Ping I ordered from Curious Plants several months ago. It is a delightfully red little gem. When I received it, it was only about half as tall and half the diameter it is now and its leaves were more pointed exactly like the product picture shown on the website – but just look at it now! Very Red and very full! The ceramic pot is only 2 inches in diameter at the top and only 2.5 inches deep. The matching water tray is more commonly known as a 3oz dipping sauce bowl but matches the pot perfectly for replenishing the distilled water.
I used my own blend of Soil consisting of:
1 Part Sand
1 Part Dolomite
1 Part Pumice
1 Part Perlite
2 Parts Canadian Peat Moss
The bottom of the pot has a quarter inch hole which was filled with a few strands of tightly rolled Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss which was trimmed to permit about half an inch to stick out the bottom side as a wick whereas the entire bottom of the pot was covered with finely chopped and thoroughly wetted Long Fiber Sphagnum about a quarter inch thick before adding the soil mix so as to wet the entire bottom of the substrate. I can’t wait to see if it eventually blooms (or produces baby offshoots), but in any event – I am totally impressed with how much it has grown.

Omg can you say carnivorous succulent? Cause I can. So freaking cute and small I love this plant to death. Was a little tricky to transplant but luckily didn’t lose any leaves. Very similar process to repotting a succulent except they have more delicate leaves so BE CAREFUL. Succulents have that hard coating around their leaves whereas this beauty has a soft surface and dew. Has already caught some gnats!
Came packaged very carefully which I appreciate. Was very safe its little cup to my carnivore pot set up. I 100% plan to buy more from curious plants and have a few bookmarked lol
