Pinguicula medusina was thought to be a form of P. heterophylla until 2000 when it was given species status. The butterwort has the ability to produce small plantlets at the tips of its carnivorous leaves as a means of self propagation. P. medusina is native to Oaxaca, Mexico near Laguna Encantada where it grows on gypsum. During winter, the plant forms an underground bulb. Please note: Plants may ship in either their carnivorous or succulent phase, see size information below.
Description
Size and packing method: You will receive a bare root plant, carefully wrapped in a damp paper towel. Plants in their carnivorous phase are 1-2 inches across and plants in their succulent phase (bulb) are a little less than 0.25 inches across. If selecting with soil mix, you will receive a little over one cup of our prepackaged Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix in addition to the bare root plant. This quantity of soil is roughly enough to fill one 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.5 inch square pot.
Growing requirements
Mature size: Nearly 12 inches across in ideal conditions
Light: Partial to full sun or grow light equivalent
Soil: Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix
Feeding: Feed bugs, dried bloodworms, fish food, or diluted foliar fertilizer such as Maxsea every 2-3 weeks
Humidity: 50-80% with adequate airflow
Water: During its active growing season provide enough distilled water for the media to remain damp. During the succulent phase, reduce watering and allow media to dry out regularly
Temperature: 55-85°F
Dormancy: Carnivorous leaves die away for a portion of the year and the plant forms a small onion-like bulb just at or below the soil surface
Planting and adjustment instructions will be included with your shipment.
