Pinguicula oblongiloba is a Mexican Butterwort native to Michoacan and is quite rare in cultivation. It was described as a species in 1844 in the botanical work “Prodromus” by Alphonse de Candolle. P. oblongiloba will form a small underground bulb for part of the year and produce flowers at the beginning of its new growing cycle. In cultivation, the plants do well in a mineral-based substrate that drains easily. Please note: Dormant bulbs currently available, see size information below.

Description

Size and packing method: You will receive a bare root plant, carefully wrapped in a damp paper towel. Plants in carnivorous form are about 1 inch across and dormant bulbs are about 0.25 inches across. If selecting with soil mix, you will receive a little over one cup of our prepackaged Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix in addition to the bare root plant. This quantity of soil is roughly enough to fill one 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.5 inch square pot.

Growing requirements

Mature size: About 3 inches in diameter
Light: Shade or grow light equivalent
Soil: Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix
Feeding: Feed bugs, dried bloodworms, fish food, or diluted foliar fertilizer such as Maxsea every 2-3 weeks
Humidity: 40-70% with adequate airflow
Water: During its active growing season provide enough distilled water for the media to remain damp. During the succulent phase, reduce watering and allow media to dry out regularly
Temperature: 55-85°F
Dormancy: Carnivorous leaves die away for a portion of the year and the plant forms a small onion-like bulb just at or below the soil surface. Bulbs do not like to be wet.

Planting and adjustment instructions will be included with your shipment.
