Pinguicula ibarrae is native to Hidalgo, Mexico where it grows in foggy humid conditions on the faces of mossy rocks. Unlike some other Mexican butterworts which prefer drier media during their winter succulent phase, P. ibarrae typically receives some level of moisture year round. Consequently, its succulent rosette rarely forms and will only make an appearance in the driest conditions. P. ibarrae was discovered in 2001 by grower Adolfo Ibarra and formally described in 2005 by botanist Sergio Zamudio.
