Pinguicula ehlersiae is a species of butterwort native to Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi, Mexico. It forms carnivorous leaves in the summer and succulent leaves in the winter and prefers a loose substrate. In its carnivorous state, Pinguicula ehlersiae forms “drool edges” on its leaves so that dew and trapped prey won’t slide off.

Description

Size and packing method: You will receive a bare root plant about 0.5 inches in diameter, carefully wrapped in a damp paper towel. If selecting with soil mix, you will receive a little over one cup of our prepackaged Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix in addition to the bare root plant. This quantity of soil is roughly enough to fill one 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.5 inch square pot.

Growing requirements

Mature size: About 1 inch in diameter
Light: Partial to full sun or grow light equivalent
Soil: Mexican Butterwort Potting Mix, sand and perlite mix
Feeding: Feed bugs, dried bloodworms, fish food, or diluted foliar fertilizer such as Maxsea every 2-3 weeks
Humidity: 50-80% with adequate airflow
Water: While in its carnivorous phase, provide enough distilled water for the media to remain damp. Reduce watering and allow the media to dry out regularly once the succulent rosette begins to form.
Temperature: 55-85°F
Dormancy: Technically none, however carnivorous leaves are replaced by a smaller succulent rosette for part of the year

It’s so cute! And it’s bigger than expected, 1″ wide instead of .5″. It was packaged carefully and shows no shipping stress at all. I’m thrilled.

Cute little guy with nice color. It pots up super easily bare root and takes to its new home nicely! Already growing new leaves and dew.
I’ve been trying a bunch of carnivorous plant shops lately, and Curious Plant has my favorite packaging so far for pings: gently wrapped in a just-damp-enough paper towel in a little sauce cup. So far with multiple orders, the plants packed like this sustain the least damage, plus the plant remains clean!

plant spent 6 days in mail, looks alright, towel still damp

  9. Joseph C. (verified owner)

Plant was healthy. In a mild dormant state, but quickly made new dew once acclimated to its new environment after a few days.
