Nepenthes ampullaria are known for their distinct shape and ability to grow basal pitchers. While the pitchers can still digest bugs, they have also adapted to collecting and digesting leaf litter as another source of nutrients. The pitcher lids are narrow and remain open at all times to allow falling leaves to easily enter the traps. Nepenthes ampullaria prefer lowland conditions that are damp and shady.
