Darlingtonia californica, commonly known as the Cobra Plant or Cobra Lily is native to northern California and southern Oregon. Mature plants are characterized by a bulbous head with  tongue-like appendages hanging from beneath. Insects attracted to the bright coloration and nectar, eventually crawl or fly into the downward facing mouth of the trap. Finding it difficult to escape once inside, the insects eventually fall down into the tubular portion of the trap and drown. Please see information on size and packing method below.

Description

Size and packing method: You will receive a young bare root plant roughly 1.5 inches across carefully wrapped in a damp paper towel. If selecting with soil mix, you will receive two cups of our prepackaged Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix in addition to the bare root plant. This quantity of soil is roughly enough to fill one 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.5 inch square pot.

Growing requirements

Mature size: Up to 3 feet tall
Light: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Carnivorous Plant Soil Mix, pure peat, peat-sand mix, or long-fiber sphagnum
Feeding: Feed bugs or fish food every 2-3 weeks, fertilizer such as Osmocote may be added to pitchers sparingly or diluted Maxsea used a foliar feed
Humidity: 50-75%
Water: Keep soil damp at all times, provide water that is low in salts and minerals such as rain or distilled water. Water is best kept cool and replaced frequently if using the tray method to prevent stagnation.
Temperature: Winter temperatures 32-50°F, summer temperatures 50-85°F. A nighttime temperature drop into the 50-60°F range is important during summer.
Dormancy: Growth stops during winter and leaf edges brown, allow 3-4 months at 50°F or less, give less light and keep soil damp, clip off old leaves once dormancy is over.
